El grupo Nicaragua Learning Exchange se formó hace aproximadamente un año en Edimburgo como parte del Adult Learning Project.
Durante este tiempo el grupo ha centrado sus esfuerzos en aprender sobre la situación en America Latina y Nicaragua a través de charlas, conferencias y conciertos.
El pasado mes de febrero realizamos la exitosa “Scotslatina Ceilidh”. Una ceilidh es un baile tradicional escocés con música en vivo, una de las manifestaciones culturales más significativas del país. A nuestra ceilidh le añadimos el toque latino con un grupo de samba y el cantautor chileno Carlos Arredondo. El equipo de voluntarios se esforzó unas diez tortillas, ensaladilla rusa, chilli pies, postres y bizcochos. Gracias a este evento pudimos recaudar fondos suficientes para enviar brigadistas este verano.
La actividad continua en el grupo y a finales de este mes Alastair Hulbert dara una charla titulada “Eduardo Galeano: rescuing the kidnapped memory of Latin America” (“Eduardo Galeano: rescatando la memoria secuestrada de America Latina“)
Cada mes nos gusta invitar a un experto para que comparta su conocimiento sobre America Latina. Ahora hemos decidido, (sin renunciar a las visitas de profesores y expertos en la materia), apostar por el autodidactismo y preparar nosotros mismos presentaciones sobre distintos temas. El abril echaremos un vistazo a las causas de la pobreza en el mundo y los peligros y virtudes de la cooperación internacional.
Estamos a la espera de recibir respuesta de la Unión Europea, pues en Enero solicitamos una ayuda para crear un centro de recursos sobre America Latina. ¡Deseadnos suerte!

The Nicaragua Learning Exchange formed a year ago as a part of the Adult Learning Project in Edinburgh.
During that time we have centred our efforts on learning about the situation in Latin America and Nicaragua through speakers, conferences and concerts.
The past February we set up the successful “Scotslatina Ceilidh”. A ceilidh is a traditional Scottish dance with live music. We added to our ceilidh the Latin flavour with a samba group and the Chilean singer and poet Carlos Arredondo. The volunteer’s team made around 10 Spanish omelettes, chili pies, Russians salad, desserts and cakes. Thanks to that event we raised funds to send to the volunteers this summer.
Our work continues in the group and at the end of March Alastair Hulbert will give a talk titled: “Eduardo Galeano: rescuing the kidnapped memory of Latin America”.
Every month we like to invite an expert who shares his/her knowledge about Latin America. Now we have decided (without renouncing experts’ visits) to become more autodidacts and to prepare by ourselves presentations about specific subjects. In April we will talk about general causes of poverty and the dangers and virtues of International Cooperation.
Now we are waiting an answer from the European Union, as in January we asked for a grant to create a specialised resources centre about Latin America. Whish us luck!
